Project Role

Associated partner

Coastal Biotech will support the Portuguese Living Lab to implement biostimulants, which are organic compounds, microbes, or their combinations, that regulate plant growth behavior through molecular alteration and physiological, biochemical, and anatomical modulations, regardless of their nutrient content.

In return, our solutions support in delivering strategic pathways in significantly reducing the negative consequences of indiscriminate chemical application without compromising crop productivity, and quality aspects, whilst combating climate change–induced stresses through mitigation of drought, salinity, low and high-temperature stress, heat waves and floods, which are impacting crop production.

Under the project, biostimulants will be explored, through a comprehensive analysis under different parameters that include:

  • the role and potential of micro–organisms in both biocontrol and growth promotion;
  • testing the impact of biostimulants on plant resilience to future climate esp. hot drought;
  • improvements in physicochemical properties of soil by reducing the degradation rate, improving soil organic content, soil aeration and water availability;
  • and to make a significant impact on dual avenues of “blue carbon farming” and nutrient cycling, leveraging the balance between perennial traits of the algae species involved, and the integration of this information into the harvesting strategy - mitigating ocean acidification and contributing to the reduction of atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, reducing the release of greenhouse gases through reduced fertilizer consumption, therefore maintaining the ecological balance of agroecosystems.

We will be actively involved in the development of circular concepts, in close collaboration with the TUM-Venture Labs Sustainability/circular and AgriFoodBiotech labs.
